You are awake. It’s about 3am in the morning, you can’t fall asleep. Is it due the heat? Is it because you are bothered by the fact your parents boss is out and has left you with two children? A baby 6 months old and a little girl 9 years old.
“You’re experienced at this and it’s worth it to earn extra cash” – you silently murmur to yourself
You can feel yourself slowly drift away into sleep as you look at the ceiling. The silence and peace stops as you find yourself with eyes wide open once again. You heard a noise coming from downstairs. You decide to check it out as it could be little girl named hope.
You head downstairs, a bit tired, yawning. You look at the clock on a counter nearby kitchen and you see that it’s 6:28AM. As you step into the kitchen you’re a bit dazzled by the sunlight coming through the windows. As you look for a sign that might reveal the maker of the noise, you’re a bit startled by the cat who has now recently jumped from the counter to on top of the fridge.
Your startled expression has now turned into a slight grin, as you take the cat from the top of the fridge, you take a look at the Persian fur ball, “little devil, aren’t ya?” – you say as you touch the tip of the cat’s nose with the tip of yours. Afterwards you let go of the cat and go up to check on the kids.
You step into the baby’s room and he’s asleep. You admire how calm the baby looks as the night light star projector shines colours on top of his cheeks. You silently close the doors and head to Hope’s bedroom. In your surprise she’s awake
“good morning, (name) have you slept well tonight?” – she said with excitement in her tone
“What are you doing up? It’s early and you don’t have school today” – you spoke softly
“The sun sure shines bright today. Do you think mummy will be back soon?” – she asked curiously
She has always talked to you in a rather formal way and you learned how to accept it by now. She certainly doesn’t act like a nine year old in conversations.
You sit down nearby her and say “Yes. She should be back soon. For now we need to go grocery shopping. Hey, maybe we could buy those creamy doughnuts you wanted?”
She looks at you and smiles “Bagels.”
“bagels.” – you nod.
Peter, her little brother. She sure knows how to be a real sister.
You look at her and smile “He’ll come too, of course.” – after those words you told her to get ready and you went to your room to dress up yourself.
30 minutes later and I see Hope head out, dressed cute in her pink outfit and a blue denim jacket, her brown, soft hair parted into two ponytails. I head to Peter’s room and take the little one, carefully waking him up and in my surprise he doesn’t cry, just looks at you with a slight grin.
“atta boy” – you smile at him.
You get into the car and buckle up both children at the backseats of the car, leaving peter in his special seat you head towards the front and secure your own safety belt.
You turn on the engine and 20 minutes later you arrive into the nearest, biggest supermarket. Holding Peter with your one hand, you make sure Hope stays by your side.
You now are walking through the cereal aisle, letting hope choose which one she wants. All of sudden you are slightly startled by a voice behind you
“Aw, he is so cute” – it was a woman’s voice.
You turn around and see a woman with incredibly short hair, boyish kind of cut. Blue eyes. By her side you see a little blonde girl.
“Thank you” – you say. “What’s your, who’s I assume, your daughter’s name?”
The woman looks at her blonde, short haired, almost down her shoulders daughter for a slight second then looks back at you and says “Sophia.”
“Ah, that’s a lovely name.” – you say and give a little smile at Sophia who seems to be a little shy.
“And hers?” – you see the woman pointing at your parents boss’s daughter.
“Hope” – you speak softly.
“Hope? Wow, what an incredible name.” – she returns the softness in her voice
Instantly after, you could hear Hope talk to Sophia, “I like your shirt” – she says while pointing at her blue t-shirt with a rainbow.
“Thanks” – she replies. “It’s my favourite.”
The nice chat has ended after a man, a bit grumpy looking has approached you and the woman. He looks at you first and then the woman and you instantly hear the man whisper to the woman: “What are you doing here, goddamn it” – he says harshly “Let’s go.” – he adds.
From what you assume, it’s her husband.
She then instantly takes her daughter’s hand and starts to leave with the man. As she walks out of the aisle, she looks back at you and says “Was nice meeting you, have a great day”. You look at her turned head and say “Wait, I didn’t catch your name!”
“Carol.” – she says
She was pretty far by that time, so you shout out “It was nice meeting you too, carol!”.
All of sudden you hear a BANG. You can hear a few people in the store cry out, and as you look down the aisle, you see a man. Covered in blood
Help…. - he says to you, seems like he’s drowned in his own agonies help…
